This community activist is the founder of the New Jersey-based <a href=\"https:\/\/neearth.org\/mission\/\">Northeast Earth Coalition,<\/a> working to protect the environment and promote local sustainability and\u00a0food security. His mission, vision and daily work is all about championing urban farming projects, community vegetable gardens and backyard food production.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Jose-German-Gomez.jpg\" alt=\"Jose German-Gomez\" class=\"wp-image-16410\" width=\"128\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Jose-German-Gomez.jpg 464w, https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Jose-German-Gomez-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 128px) 100vw, 128px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jose Germ\u00e1n-G\u00f3mez, founder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jos\u00e9, who was born in Puerto Rico and now lives in New Jersey, especially loves to work the land with Latinx groups. One of his favorites is a close-knit community of Mexican women who have been tending a community garden with him for seven years. Jos\u00e9 loves to show them how the jard\u00edn skills they use were pioneered by indigenous people across Latin America and the Caribbean. Many of the very same vegetables, fruits and herbs they grow today were also harvested by their forefathers and foremothers\u2014who likely placed them on their own Day of the Dead altars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dWe garden with a lot of Mexican ancestral techniques. We start from seeds, many of which they bring with them or family members send from Mexico,\u201d says Jos\u00e9. \u201cI have noticed that they feel a strong passion to grow herbs they use for medicine.\u201d Herbs like papalo, which they use to help reduce swelling and heal stomach disorders. With a strong flavor that tastes something like cilantro, their fresh papalo also makes its way into their <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/the-best-carne-asada-tacos\/\">tacos<\/a>, tamales and <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/jackies-green-chicken-enchiladas-to-make-you-soar\/\">enchiladas<\/a>, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-day-of-the-dead-celebration-in-the-garden\">A Day of The Dead Celebration in the Garden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mexican women came together during harvest one fall day some years back to create a beautiful Day of the Dead altar and ceremony that Jos\u00e9 will never forget. \u201dIt happened very naturally. In a matter of seconds, the table was transformed into an altar. The table has three levels on it: heaven, earth, and purgatory. It was their lived experience. They brought <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/how-to-make-pan-de-muerto-a-day-of-the-dead-traditional-ofrenda\/\">pan de muerto<\/a>. Sugar skulls. They brought <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/frida-kahlos-red-tamales-with-pork\/\">tamales<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/gracies-chilaquiles-verdes\/\">Chilaquiles<\/a>. We burned a special incense. We were also honoring the community gardens at the end of the harvest so they placed&nbsp; a photo of Zapata on top of the altar, because he was a fighter for social and agricultural justice in Mexico. We had photos of loved ones, including my mother, who are departed. They sang songs spontaneously, all traditional and again, no planning. The plato was made by one of the gardeners, Elizabeth Valderrama, who is from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poza_Rica\">Poza Rica, Veracruz<\/a>, with fresh Mexican squash pulled from their community plot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These calabacitas are a family recipe that Elizabeth learned from her grandmother and mother, Jose says. She told him that offering this dish makes her feel \u201cconnected to her past when she was living in Mexico and growing up, sharing time with her grandmother. Every time that she cooks the recipe reminds her of the old days.
