Unlike my from-scratch <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/mi-abuelas-habichuelas-coloradas-puerto-rican-red-beans\/\">grandmother\u2019s recipe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/mi-abuelas-habichuelas-coloradas-puerto-rican-red-beans\/\">for red beans<\/a>, Titi\u2019s recipe starts by opening a can of red or pink habichuelas and uses <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/dona-felipa-how-to-make-puerto-rican-sofrito\/\">sofrito<\/a>, always a good thing in Boricua cooking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beans then simmer for about half an hour\u2014and are ready to serve with flavorful white rice, or <a href=\"https:\/\/familiakitchen.com\/puerto-rican-rice-with-pork\/\">this arroz<\/a> by one by one of our favorite Puerto Rican cooks, Michelle Ezratty Murphy. Saute for 3 minutes.<\/li><li id=\"wpzoom-rcb-direction-step-5ff508fa21290\" class=\"direction-step\">Add tomato sauce, stir and simmer for 5 minutes.<\/li><li id=\"wpzoom-rcb-direction-step-5ff508fa21291\" class=\"direction-step\">Add the chopped calabaza or pumpkin and let simmer for 5 to 8 minutes, until soft.<\/li><li id=\"wpzoom-rcb-direction-step-9fad5fac7c2fa\" class=\"direction-step\">Add the can of beans with their liquid plus the same can filled halfway with water (6 to 8 oz.). Stir, cover and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes. <\/li><li id=\"wpzoom-rcb-direction-step-1610232090642907\" class=\"direction-step\">When the beans are soft and the liquid looks stewy-creamy, stir and taste. Adjust seasonings if necessary\u2014and they are ready to serve <em>on<\/em> (never beside, according to my family) your arroz favorito.<\/li><\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"recipe-card-notes\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"notes-title\">Notes<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<ul class=\"recipe-card-notes-list\"><li>Substitute chopped carrots or a potato if you can&#8217;t find Puerto Rican calabaza. Use diced green bell peppers if you don\u2019t have aj\u00ed dulces.<\/li><li>Puerto Rican calabazas are sometimes called West Indian or kabocha pumpkins. Unlike the pumpkins we are used to in the States, these are medium size and usually green or yellow on the outside.
