Get your celebracíon going in style with your choice of two official piña colada recipes — classic and a skinny version for the health conscious — from the cocktail experts and master blender at Don Q rum, the No. 1-selling Puerto Rican rum used in the first-ever piña colada when it was invented in 1954.
Which version will you make? Check out the two recipes below!
Why are we going all Puerto Rico pride this and every June? For 65 years and counting, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade has been taking to the streets of New York City to celebrate Puerto Rican pride. It’s loud, joyous and unmistakably Boricua. There’s lots of dancing, drumming and delicioso food.
Think of it as the nation’s biggest Boricua block party, and everyone is invited.

Let’s Celebrate with 2 Piña Colada Recipes
We’re doing our part here at Familia Kitchen by hosting a month-long salute of Puerto Rican heritage, cuisine and rum. (It’s also where our co-founder Kim is from: Boricua love is in our DNA.) As you know, we’re all about keeping things authentic and sabroso, so we’ll be cooking with lots of sofrito and sipping a piña c.
Fun fact: Did you know the piña colada is the official cocktail of Puerto Rico? The drink was invented by one wise and wonderful Boricua bartender named Ramon ”Monchito“ Marrero, who whipped up the first-even frozen libation in 1954 at San Juan’s Caribe Hilton hotel, using Don Q Gold. His recipe is below: the classic. We also like the skinny, because: summer.
Join us in raising a piña colada to salute to the sabor of the island and the spirit of Boricuas back home in Puerto Rico and here in the States. ¡Que viva!
